Short Gosainkunda Lake Trek—5 Days
Gosainkunda Lake is a high-altitude alpine lake located at 4,360 meters (14,304 feet) in the Langtang region of Nepal. It holds deep religious and spiritual significance, especially for Hindus and Buddhists. The lake is believed to have been created by Lord Shiva, who struck his trident (Trishul) into the mountain to draw water and cool his burning throat after consuming poison to save the world, according to Hindu mythology.
Every year during the Janai Purnima festival (usually in August), thousands of pilgrims, including shamans and devotees, trek up to the lake to take a holy dip, believing it will cleanse their sins and bring blessings. The area around Gosainkunda is dotted with dozens of smaller sacred lakes, including Bhairab Kunda, Saraswati Kunda, and Surya Kunda.
Surrounded by stunning snow-capped peaks and serene landscapes, Gosainkunda is not just a religious site but also a popular trekking destination. Its clear, icy-blue waters and peaceful atmosphere offer a truly spiritual and natural escape.
This short yet rewarding trek spans 5 days, with 3 days of trekking and 2 days of travel by vehicle. For those with more time, the route can be extended to include the Langtang Valley or the Lauribina La Pass (4,620m), eventually ending near the Kathmandu Valley in Sundarijal.
Located close to the Tibetan border, the region is home to the Tamang community, rich in culture, tradition, and untouched natural beauty. Other treks in this area include the Langtang Valley Trek, Tamang Heritage Trail, and Gosainkunda-Lauribina La Pass Trek.
Along the way, you'll experience pristine nature and may spot diverse wildlife, flora, and fauna. Gosainkunda features several sacred lakes, such as Bhairab Kunda, Parbati Kunda, Surya Kunda, and Saraswati Kunda. Among these, Gosainkunda and Bhairab Kunda are the largest and most significant.
